The Voigt Family
It all started with a shotgun and one man’s crazy idea…
None of the Voigt’s could ever forget the day the brewery opened on July 17, 2006. Everyone sat anxiously awaiting the first customer. We sat, and sat, hoping someone – anyone, would come in. We could have never imagined in our wildest dreams that a brewery in Birdsview would have gained so much popularity.
Bill Voigt and his wife Kris have always been very independent people and did not like to work for anyone but themselves. For over 35 years, they have each been self -employed and running their own businesses. Every few years, they would come up with some wild new business venture – from windsock making to creating headboards. But none of their ideas seemed to pan out. Call it bad luck – or simply fate – either way, Bill and Kris could not seem to get a new idea off the ground.
In 2004, Bill won a shotgun in the local fire hall raffle. There was no way Kris was letting him bring that shotgun home, so he took the money instead and purchased his first home brewery kit. After that, he was hooked. He turned part of his upholstery shop into his brewing area, putting three taps onto an old refrigerator. He experimented with many different beer recipes. Some were keepers, some were not. For the most part though, everyone loved Bill’s beer. Friends would often congregate to the shop to drink the latest brews. Before long, they started encouraging him to sell his beer to the masses. It took a lot of persistence from friends, his own courage, and his family's support before he was finally ready to take his idea to the next level.
At first, the kids thought this was just another one of dad’s crazy ideas. “Go for it dad” they said; yet secretly they were all thinking it was another idea that would end up just like the others. But they also knew their dad had to satisfy his dreams. So he ran with the idea. With the help and support of his family, Bill Voigt embarked on one of the wildest journeys of his life. Not knowing how deep they would go, Bill and Kris dove in head first, with no reservations. Brewmaster Bill began making his beers for the world to enjoy. And Kris became the Deli Queen, working right alongside her husband serving up some of the tastiest food around.
The Voigts are so thankful for the success they have had in the years since the brewery opened. We are grateful to all of the loyal customers who continue to show their support, and the passerbys who just happen upon us.
This story was written to Bill and Kris from their children on their one year anniversary. If you are reading this, you have seen firsthand the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into this operation. You have seen the hard work and determination of a courageous couple- a couple who has set an amazing example for their children, their grandchildren, and the rest of the world – that anything is possible, the impossible just takes more time.
